Dental Implants
Even today, implants are among the greatest innovations in modern dentistry. They are the best solution for missing teeth. They provide a solid and lasting replacement tooth or teeth (crown, bridge or prosthesis). To take advantage of these high-quality replacements, the implant(s) must first be placed in a procedure that your Ottawa General Dentist Solutions dentist has mastered.
Who would be an ideal candidate for a dental implant?
When determining whether a patient is a suitable candidate for dental implants, several factors related to their overall dental health are taken into consideration. Here are some of the key factors:
- Sufficient bone density: A patient should have adequate bone density and volume to support the implant.
- Healthy gums: The patient should have healthy gums without active periodontal disease.
- Absence of active dental infections: Before undergoing implant surgery, any existing dental infections, such as tooth decay, should be treated and resolved.
- Systemic health considerations: Certain systemic health conditions, such as uncontrolled diabetes, immune disorders, or certain medications, may affect the healing process and implant integration.
- Smoking habits: Smoking impairs blood flow and slows down the healing process, increasing the risk of implant failure.
Once the patient is deemed eligible for dental implants, our Ottawa dentist will develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to his specific needs. He will also discuss the different types of dental implants available and help patients make an informed decision regarding the best option for their specific case.
What is a dental implant?
The implant is a type of titanium screw that is inserted into the jawbone during a highly precise operation. During the post-surgical healing period, the implant fuses with the bone, making it very strong. In a second surgery, an abutment is placed on the implant to serve as a base for a crown, bridge or prosthesis. Unlike other options (fixed bridge, traditional prosthesis), which are suspended or simply placed on the gum, implant-supported replacements replace all the parts of the tooth.
What are the components of an implant replacement?
- The implant: it acts like an artificial root. It allows the replacement teeth to hold firmly while stimulating the bone into which it is screwed;
- The abutment: this small part makes the link between the implant, which is under the gum, and the crown, the bridge or the prosthesis;
- The restoration or prosthesis: this is the actual replacement tooth or teeth. It is custom-made to fit perfectly with the natural dentition.

What is the procedure for installing dental implants?
A few steps over several months are necessary to enjoy a quality replacement:
- Preparation: If the natural tooth or teeth are still present, they are removed. Otherwise, scans are taken to ensure that the bone is suitable for implants. If it is not, a bone graft may be performed first. We also plan all the details of the surgery.
- Implantation: During this surgery, performed under local anesthesia, your Ottawa dentist makes an incision in the gum to create enough space within the bone to place the implant(s). He then closes the gum tissue with stitches.
- Osseointegration: in the months that follow, the operated site heals and the titanium screw(s) fuse with the bone.
- The abutment: during a second procedure, the gum is reopened and an abutment is placed on each implant before suturing the site.
- The restoration: the crown, bridge or prosthesis is first made, adjusted and then fixed on the abutment(s).
