Your dentist at General Dentist Solutions can perform crown lengthening surgery in Ottawa

Crown Lengthening

The crown is the outer part of the tooth that lies above the gum. Normally, its length and that of the pink tissue should be balanced. However, sometimes the gum tissue falls too high on the crown of the teeth or surrounds them unevenly, affecting the appearance of the smile. To correct this situation, your dentist at General Dentist Solutions can perform crown lengthening surgery in Ottawa.

In which cases is a
crown lengthening performed?

The main function of the gum is to protect the roots of the tooth against external attacks (acid agents, bacteria, etc.). This is why it normally covers this part of the tooth, but leaves the crown completely exposed. However, it happens that the gum rises too high (on the lower teeth) or sinks too low (on the upper teeth). In other cases, the tissues surround the teeth in an irregular manner. In these cases, the crown needs lengthening.

The main reasons for this intervention?

  • Aesthetics: when the gum is too long or abnormally surrounds the teeth, the appearance of the smile is affected. The impression of a “gummy smile” is unattractive.
  • Oral health: bacterias tend to attack or penetrate excess soft tissue more easily. These may need to be removed to control periodontal disease. Long gums can also interfere with certain dental procedures (cavity care and other infections, dental crowns, etc.).

How do you go about lengthening a crown?

To lengthen the crown, your Ottawa dentist removes some of the gum tissue or reshapes it to make it more even. This results in longer teeth and a more uniform, aesthetically pleasing appearance. To achieve these results, a gingivectomy or gingivoplasty is performed, depending on the situation.

What is the difference between gingivectomy and gingivoplasty?

Gingivoplasty

Gingivoplasty

is performed when the gums surround the teeth in an irregular manner. It aims to remove excess tissue or reshape the gums to correct this situation and make their appearance more uniform.

Gingivectomy

Gingivectomy

This is used when the gum is too long. Part of the gum is removed so that more of the crown is visible. The junction line between the gum and the teeth becomes more regular and aesthetic.
