Why use dental implants?

Implants are small titanium screws inserted into the jawbone and used to support one or more replacement teeth. They differ from other replacement options (fixed bridge, removable dentures) by their numerous advantages:

  • They replace the entire tooth: implants act like artificial tooth roots. They stimulate the bone, preventing it from losing mass and volume;
  • They provide a stable foundation for dental replacements: this increases the strength and comfort of the crown, bridge or prosthesis they support. In addition, implants are permanent. They do not have to be replaced if the restauration breaks.
  • They are versatile: implants can be used to support several types of restorations or dentures. They can therefore be used to compensate for the absence of a variable number of teeth.

Who can benefit from dental implants?

This solution is for anyone who is missing one or more teeth. However, implants cannot be placed under all circumstances. The jawbone must be deep and thick enough, which is not always the case. Fortunately, your Ottawa dentist can remedy this situation with a bone graft or sinus lift

What are the
necessary steps?

  • Removal of the damaged tooth, if not already done;
  • Jaw preparation, including bone grafting or sinus lift, if necessary;
  • Implant surgery;
  • A healing period during which the implants fuse with the jawbone;
  • The installation of the abutment (the part which makes the link between the implant and the replacement which one fixes to it);
  • The placement of the crown, bridge or prosthesis on implants. The restoration is designed and fabricated during the healing period.
