Dental Crowns and Bridges

The presence of a severely damaged tooth or empty space in the smile affects its appearance and functionality. That's why it's imperative to have a dental restoration or replacement done in these situations. Your dentist at General Dentist Solutions in Ottawa offers high-quality crowns and bridges for this purpose. With these, your teeth will be restored to their full functional and aesthetic qualities.

What is a dental crown?

A crown is a fixed ceramic prosthesis that aims to repair and solidify a weakened or badly damaged tooth to restore a beautiful smile. It is a hollow shell that is placed over the visible part of a tooth that is in poor condition, but whose root is still viable. This may be due to trauma that has resulted in the death of the central nerve, wear (normal or undue), or a deep infection that has not been properly treated. In some cases, a crown is also used to close a tooth following a root canal.

What is a dental bridge?

A bridge is designed to replace a tooth (sometimes two) located between two healthy teeth. Made of a mixture of ceramic and metal that ensures its strength and aesthetics, it has two main sections:

  • The pontic: this is the name given to the replacement tooth that is suspended between two crowns;
  • Abutments: These are the neighboring teeth on which the crowns are placed to support the bridge. These support teeth must be trimmed before the crowns are attached. This preparation allows the bridge to remain firmly and permanently in place.

Why use a crown or bridge?

Crowns and bridges fulfill important and beneficial functions by compensating for damaging situations (severe damage or loss of a tooth):

  • Protection of the surrounding teeth and tissues: a very damaged tooth is often more abrasive, while empty spaces are conducive to bacterial infiltration. The crown therefore protects against undue wear of adjacent and corresponding teeth. The bridge, on the other hand, limits the risk of infection;
  • Restoration of the functional capacities of the dentition: chewing is more difficult when the dentition is incomplete or when a tooth is damaged;
  • Improving the aesthetics of the smile: the presence of a damaged tooth or an empty space gives the smile a neglected or aged appearance.
